Preheat the barbecue.

Mix the onion with the mince and season with salt and pepper. Pack this tightly around the can of beer, to about halfway up (see here). Wrap the bacon around the mince. Loosen the meat carefully and remove the beer can, to form a ‘cup’. Fill it with tomatoes, mushrooms, or anything else you like. Sprinkle the cheese on top, pushing it down into the cup.

Place on the grill and close the lid. Don’t grill it over direct heat – it could burn. This can also easily be done in the oven, at 200ºC/400ºF/Gas Mark 6. In either case, the burger will be finished when the bacon looks nice and golden.

IMPORTANT! While the burger is cooking, open the beer and drink it.
